Open Question: Can a Non Profit Organization sell things?
I am wondering if, in the US, a Non Profit Organization may produce certain item and sell it if the profit (if any, as the idea I have is mostly towards a sell way below market value, as a type of social service) and still be considered a Non Profit, with all the tax exceptions and breaks they get. Let me try to give an idea of what I mean.
I did my undergrad overseas, where textbooks are much cheaper, but for the better part of the last decade I have been teaching in the US. I always heard students complaining about the expensiveness of the textbooks, but I never really took it seriously, as I had heard that even when I disagreed. Nevertheless, I came to realize yesterday that the students of the calculus class I am teaching (over which I have no decision power about textbook and such, and have to require the materials agreed by the school) have to spend close to $400 just for my class. I was horrified. I am certain that a textbook as good as the main one we use (that takes about $315 of the $400 needed), can be produced to sell at a MUCH lower price.
Thinking about this, I thought that finding a few people interested on it, a non profit could be created to produce high quality textbooks for a price much lower than that students in America pay. But I wonder that, as the main purpose would be to sell a commodity, even if it is at a very low profit, that just allow the organization to self-preserve, if in such case would not be considered a non profit.
I would thank any direct reference.

Open Question: Pampered Chef - Zipcar Tax Deductions?
I am thinking of becoming a Pampered Chef consultant, but I am in a big city and do not own a car. I am able to rent a Zipcar through a local car-sharing opportunity, in order to get to the suburbs for engagements. I know that I could deduct for mileage, but am wondering: since this would be a 'business-related expense,' could i deduct the zipcar cost?
