Open Question: Rental property expenses deduction?
I moved out of my house on 10/31/2009 and converted it into a rental property. It took me two weeks to get the house ready for renting but it didn't rent till 02/01/2010. So I only have rental expenses (new paint, carpet and utilities, etc.) and no rental income for 2009. My 2009 AGI is low enough to allow the rental expenses deduction. My question is, because I lived in the house for 10 (out of 12) months in 2009, am I allowed to deduct the rental expenses on my 2009 tax return or not? The instructions in the IRS publications about living in and renting a property in the same year are some what confusing. Thank you.

I told him that since i already did a personal exemption on my 1040EZ he cannot claim me as dependent. I am a full-time student at CSU-sacramento for spring 2009 and withdrew for fall 2009. I worked and earned about 9,000 dollars and also did a loan for school, 3,500 dollars. I pay for house rent since fall 2009 and my personal belongings. He provides the house and things including the house. I now am a full time student for Spring 2010. He claims that he needs to claim me for my financial aid....is that true? Does he need to claim me to get financial aid? Can he claim me as dependent when i already claim myself? Do you get penalized if you do?
Open Question: Where do I claim my tips on my taxes?
I'm not really sure where I put the amount of cash tips that I've made at my serving job on my taxes. It's not a huge amount, maybe like $300 over the span of 5 months. Do I add it to the "Wages/Tips" part on my W2? I want to do this honestly, I'm just not really sure where I put the amount. Thanks!

Open Question: Barely got my W2 from an old employer, but I already filed my ...
So, I'm a college student and last year I worked three different jobs to make ends meet. One was a regular job, another was a part-time at home job that paid me like a contract job so I used the 1099 on that, and a third job that I worked at for two weeks (and got paid one check) who also paid me like a contract job. I had even completely forgot about it, so I filed my taxes as soon as I got my W2s (and even though I'm struggling with my bills and tuition and books I ended up having to pay back the government $12 grrr) anyhow, I wasn't including this last job that also paid me like a contract job and for the two weeks I got paid a total of $405. Question, what do I do now that I've already filed and they just gave it to me? Wasn't there a deadline THEY had to meet? They sent it out Feb 28. Question, does that mean I'm gonna have to pay MORE if I add this one? I can't afford this no way no how! I'm a college student all on my own! :'( Only reason why I didn't really think about the last w2 was because it was ONE check & I have no idea about this kind of contract stuff, I'm a college student it's my first time doing all of this, I thought only if you made over $1,000 you had to report it like my other job told me, I wasn't trying to get out of paying or reporting it.... freakin government taking the only money I have left. Thank you all for your answers.
